Hyper-local newsletter sections

When you open a newspaper there are sections for each type of news article. Those sections are in the same position within the newspaper every day/week.

Below I’ve listed various sections I’ve used over the years for hyper-local newsletters that might give you some inspiration for your local area.

• Sports news

• Sports calendar

• Community calendar

• School/Education news

• Entertainment (Local and live events)

• Messages (teachings) from Churches

• Information from community groups

• Business news

• Advertorials

• Council/Government news

• Get involved (could cover volunteer positions, occasional events run by community groups, etc)

• Spotlight on local people

• Letters to the Editor

• Editorial

• Comic/Puzzle

• Message from the Mayor/Councillor/MP

• In the news (links to articles/videos your area has been mentioned in)

• Photo gallery

Personally, I put the community information towards the front (community calendar, any community group news), followed by information from larger organisations (Council, Government), and similar to local newspapers, sports articles towards the end.

Making a template of sections early on has saved me a lot of time not needing to think about where I should place articles, and allows my readers to know where to look for certain types of information each week.
